EXTENSION AFTERCARE

Before the commitment is made to have hair extensions fitted, you must consider all the advice.

Hair extensions, if cared for correctly are not hard work and will not damage your own hair, if you strictly follow the aftercare and advice of your extensionist.

WASHING

  • Before washing always brush gently working from ends towards the scalp, ensuring all tugs/ knots are removed.

  • Use a gentle conditioning/moisturising sulphate free shampoo (See Products). NEVER use a volumising shampoo! Volumising shampoos raise the cuticle of the hair and can cause the hair to matt/tangle.

  • Do not scrub roughly while washing.

  • Gently comb through with fingers in a downward motion while washing and rinsing.

  • Do not apply conditioner to bonds or locks.

  • Excessive use of conditioner on oily hair can weaken the keratin bonds and silicon rings.

  • Softly towel dry by patting before blow-drying. Apply a good quality serum and heat protector before using any heat tools such as hair-dryer, curling or straightening tools.

  • When blow-drying hair, blow in a downward direction, not up into the direction hair.

  • Styling with a curling wand or flat iron is permitted, however, try to reduce the heat on all appliances to increase the lifespan of your hair extensions.

  • It is recommended that you do not wash your hair extensions more than 3 times a week.
  • Over-washing will dry the hair extensions and reduce their lifespan.

  • Dry shampoos are highly recommended in-between washes.

SWIMMING

  • Always braid hair before swimming to help avoid tangling.

  • Try to avoid saltwater and chlorine (the worst for extensions).

  • If you do swim, always rinse saltwater and chlorine out immediately and apply a conditioner.

SLEEPING

  • Braiding long extensions is recommended before bed, this will reduce any matting at the root.
  • NEVER GO TO BED WITH WET HAIR!

IMPORTANT

FUN FACT: We lose 80-120 hairs a day!

When wearing hair extensions this hair is attached to the individual strands and cannot shed naturally and the lost hair can become matted. To reduce this, it is recommended that you separate each individual strand - this will not cause any damage to your natural hair.

It is normal to lose individual strands due to natural shedding during the lifetime of your extensions (around 10-30%).

Other factors can increase this process.

See below:

  • Incorrect brush (very important).
  • Shampoos that are not suitable for extensions (containing sulphate).
  • Excess use of conditioners & treatments.
  • Excessive use of the gym/ sports (the body’s natural salt can't break down the bonds).
  • Excessive washing colouring extensions.
